CUPE 8443 education support workers send strong message with overwhelming strike mandate

Education support workers with the Saskatoon Public Schools have delivered a strong strike mandate, with nearly 94% voting in favour of strike action.

CUPE 8443 represents close to 1,500 education support workers in over 50 different roles across Saskatoon’s public schools. These workers keep schools running day to day, support students and classrooms, and maintain safe learning environments.

“This mandate shows how serious we are about the outstanding issues in bargaining,” said Dene Nicholson, CUPE 8443 president. “We’re dealing with rising costs while our wages continue to fall behind. We are standing together because we want a fair deal that reflects the work we do.”

CUPE Saskatchewan president Kent Peterson said the result underscores growing pressure in Saskatchewan’s education system.

“Education support workers are fundamental to student success and the operation of schools,” said Peterson. “This strong mandate sends a clear message that our members can’t continue to be undervalued while being asked to do more every year with fewer resources.”

CUPE 8443 says its priority remains reaching a negotiated agreement.

“We want a fair deal,” said Nicholson. “We are ready keep bargaining and reach an agreement that respects our work and supports safe, reliable public education.”

Mediation dates have not yet been scheduled. CUPE 8443 is not currently in a legal strike position.
